Netflix versus Hulu

By Brianna Baldwin and Katie Keith

Satellite Television replaced cable, and now streaming services are replacing satellite television. This is due to the price differences as well as what is included. DirecTV has five plans all costing substantially more than popular streaming services’ lowest, and even some services’ highest priced plans. DirecTV plans can cost anywhere from $35 to $110 per month which offers anywhere from 155 channels to 330 channels. With Dish, another satellite television provider, plans can cost anywhere from $37.99 to $104.99 with 50 to 290 channels offered depending on the plan chosen. Both companies require a two year contract, meaning the customer/user must pay for the service for two years before deciding if they do not want the service any longer. Most streaming services do not have a contract as well as lower prices. This only one reason why a majority of the upcoming generations opt for streaming services over cable and satellite television, but which streaming service is best? Here we will be comparing Hulu and Netflix, two of the multiple popular streaming services.

Although Hulu has been available for subscription since October 29th, 2007, Hulu began gaining traction as well as adding new plans in recent years. They have four different basic package deals such as regular Hulu, Hulu without ads, Hulu plus Live TV, and Hulu without ads plus Live TV. There is a vary in price. Regular Hulu (no Live TV plus ads) is priced at $7.99 per month. If you do not want to have any advertisements while watching your programs, the price will raise to $11.99. If you want Live TV with advertisements it is $39.99 and without is $43.99 per month. They have also labeled a disclaimer with this last option that deciding to pay for no advertisements only affects the Hulu part of the plan, not Live TV. To any of the plans mentioned above, you also have the option to add any number of four additional plans. These include HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and Starz. Each addition will add anywhere from $8.99 to $14.99 to your monthly bill. If you had decided to pay for a Live TV plan, Hulu has even more options for you to add to your plan. Two of the three options are enhanced cloud DVR and unlimited screens. Each of these add $14.99 to your bill every month, but if you decide you want both, you can get the bundled price of a $20 addition to your bill. All of these options can leave potential buyers confused and lost, so Hulu offers a free trial for new users that lasts for one month, but be careful; Hulu will automatically bill its users after the one month free trial is over, unless the user manually cancels their subscription. Are these prices still too high? Well, if you are a college student, Spotify offers a student discount including Spotify premium, Hulu (with ads), and Showtime for $4.99 per month. Hulu has around 1,650 TV shows and 2,500 movies within their library.

Another streaming platform is Netflix. Netflix is very popular among the younger generations due to a broad selection of movies, TV shows, and documentaries. When signing up for Netflix, you get a 30 day free trial before committing to paying for it. Like Hulu, if you do not manually cancel your Netflix subscription, you will be billed accordingly. If you decide to keep with Netflix, there are three plans. There is the basic plan, which is $8.99 a month, where you can watch on one screen. One screen means only one person can watch at a time on the account but on any device including a laptop, TV, phone, or tablet. The second option is the standard plan, which is $12.99 a month. On the standard plan you can watch on two screens and the content is in HD. The last package is the premium plan where you can watch on four screens at the same time, has HD and Ultra HD, and is $15.99 a month. Netflix can be more pricey, but there is more Netflix Originals including the iconic Bird Box, Orange is the New Black, and Paradise PD. When it comes to Netflix, there is no college student discount, which can make college expenses harder to control. Netflix has 6,494 movies and 1,609 TV shows.

Both streaming services have gained massive popularity over the years. Hulu has 57 million subscribers while Netflix has 139 million. Both have admirable qualities when comparing the two. Both streaming services are making changes. Will they be for the best or for the worst? That’s up to personal opinion. Just remember the Bird Box memes.
